The stance and power required to wield one of these means it is never going to be a pleasant sensation. Traditionally the bottom third of the cane is soaked overnight to give it extra weight and flexibility. In the soaked state and at full force it will break open the skin by the second or third stroke. Unsoaked and with less force it is a hard thud with a deep and long-lasting feel.
